What we do at the office
The usual cause is pericoronitis: the gum flap over a partially erupted wisdom tooth traps food and bacteria, and the tissue becomes inflamed and infected. It is intensely painful, it makes opening the jaw difficult, and it flares up on exactly the sort of schedule — poor sleep, different food, long days — that a holiday provides.
