Knocked-out tooth? What to do right now
For a permanent tooth, handle it by the crown, keep it moist, and call before you travel to the office. A knocked-out baby tooth needs different care, so do not put it back in the socket.

What to do with a knocked-out permanent tooth
- Pick it up by the crown. Do not touch or scrub the root.
- Rinse gently if dirty. Do not use soap or household cleaners.
- Keep it moist. If you cannot place it back in the socket, store it in milk or saline while you call.
- Call before traveling over. Tell the team whether it is a permanent or baby tooth and when the injury happened.
A baby tooth is different
Do not put a knocked-out baby tooth back in the socket. Replacing it can harm the permanent tooth developing underneath. Call for guidance and explain the child’s age and what happened.
When to go to an emergency department
Go for a serious head or face injury, possible broken jaw, heavy bleeding that will not stop, trouble breathing or swallowing, or loss of consciousness.
