What should you do right after a tooth breaks?
- Rinse your mouth gently with warm water and keep any piece you find.
- Use a cold compress on your cheek if there is swelling.
- Avoid chewing on the injured side. Tell us if a sharp edge is cutting your mouth.
- If there is bleeding, press gently with clean gauze. Get medical help if it is heavy or will not stop.
A chip and a deep crack can need different care
Pain when biting, sensitivity, a loose tooth, and where the break sits all matter. Dr. Sidawi needs to examine the tooth to see how deep the damage goes before recommending a repair. If the nerve is involved, he can discuss whether root canal care is appropriate.
Did a whole tooth come out?
A knocked-out adult tooth needs urgent dental care. Hold it by the crown, not the root, and keep it moist in milk or a tooth-preservation product while you get help. Do not put a baby tooth back in its socket.
When to go to an emergency department
Go for a serious head or face injury, a possible broken jaw, heavy bleeding that will not stop, or trouble breathing or swallowing.
