What we do at the office

We extract when the tooth is beyond restoring: split below the gum, decayed past the point a filling or crown can hold, or so infected that saving it is not realistic. We will always tell you if we think the tooth could be kept, and what that would involve.

The area is numbed completely before we start. Afterwards you get written aftercare, and the one instruction that matters most is not to rinse vigorously, smoke or use a straw for the first 24 hours — that is how the clot gets dislodged and a dry socket starts, which is more painful than the extraction itself.

Go to a hospital emergency room first if you have swelling closing an eye or spreading into your neck, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or a fever alongside facial swelling. That is a medical emergency before it is a dental one.

Does it hurt?

The area is fully numb, so you feel pressure rather than pain. Afterwards, ordinary painkillers are usually enough.

What is a dry socket and how do I avoid one?

It is when the blood clot in the socket is lost, usually two to four days later, exposing bone. Avoid smoking, straws, vigorous rinsing and spitting for the first 24 hours. If you get a deep ache a few days later, call us — it is quickly treatable.

Can I fly afterwards?

Most people can fly the next day without trouble, but tell us your flight time when you call and we will plan around it.
