What to do right now

Save any fragments in milk. Some chips can be bonded straight back on.

Rinse with warm water to clear any debris.

Cover a sharp edge with dental wax or a piece of sugar-free gum so it stops cutting your tongue or cheek.

Cold compress if the lip or cheek is swelling from the knock.

If you can see pink or red in the middle of the break, come now. That is the nerve, and it needs covering quickly.

What we do at the office

How urgent it is depends entirely on how deep the break goes. A chipped edge of enamel is uncomfortable and unsightly but can wait until morning. A break into the dentine is sensitive and should be covered within a day or two. A break that exposes the nerve is genuinely urgent — it is acutely painful and the tooth will become infected if it is left open.

Repairs range from smoothing and polishing a rough edge, to composite bonding that rebuilds the missing corner in one visit, to a crown, to a root canal first if the nerve is involved. Front teeth are matched to the shade of the neighbours, which for most visitors is the part they actually care about.

Go to a hospital emergency room first if you have swelling closing an eye or spreading into your neck, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or a fever alongside facial swelling. That is a medical emergency before it is a dental one.

Can you make it look normal again before I fly home?

In most cases yes, in a single visit. Composite bonding on a front tooth is shaped and shade-matched in the chair, so you leave with the tooth looking whole.

I lost the piece that broke off. Does that matter?

Not much — we rebuild with composite. It matters more that we check the fragment is not lodged in your lip or gum, which happens more often than people expect.

It does not hurt at all. Do I still need to come in?

Yes, but not necessarily tonight. A painless break still leaves a weakened tooth that will usually fracture further, and the second break is nearly always worse than the first.
