What to do right now

Cover the end with orthodontic wax — a small ball pressed over the wire. Sugar-free gum works in a pinch.

Try to tuck the wire back with the eraser end of a pencil or a cotton bud. Gentle pressure only.

Do not cut the wire unless it is so long it risks being swallowed or is choking you.

Salt-water rinses help the ulcer that a poking wire leaves behind.

Keep any loose brackets or bands and bring them with you.

What we do at the office

We handle the emergency part of orthodontics: trimming or re-tucking a wire that is cutting you, re-attaching a loose bracket, and replacing a lost band or spacer so your treatment does not slip backwards while you are away from your own orthodontist.

We will not change your treatment plan — that stays with your orthodontist at home. What we do is make you comfortable and stable enough to get through the rest of the trip, and we can send notes on what we did so your orthodontist can pick up where they left off.

Go to a hospital emergency room first if you have swelling closing an eye or spreading into your neck, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or a fever alongside facial swelling. That is a medical emergency before it is a dental one.

Will this set my treatment back?

A few days with a broken bracket rarely matters. Weeks with a missing bracket or an unattached wire can, which is why it is worth sorting out here rather than waiting for the flight home.

I have clear aligners, not braces. Can you help?

If an attachment has come off or an aligner is cracked, call us and describe it. Some of that we can help with; some genuinely needs your own provider, and we will tell you which.

How much does it cost?

It depends on what is broken, and it is one of the least expensive things we do. We quote it on the phone.
